Is motorcycle insurance required by law?

Almost all states in the United States require owners to have motorcycle insurance. Motorcycles must show proof of insurance coverage to register the motor vehicle.

Keep in mind, how much coverage you are required to purchase varies by state. Each state sets minimum liability limits that drivers must purchase for bodily injury and property damage liability.

Some states require personal injury protection, while other states do not.

Generally, in most U.S. states motorcycles must have at least $25,000 in bodily injury protection per person and $50,000 per accident, as well as $10,000 in property damage coverage.

What states do not require motorcycle insurance?

As of 2020, Florida is the only state that does not require motorcycle insurance.

If you’re a Florida resident who owns a motorcycle you might think do I need motorcycle insurance?

Unless you are prepared to be completely financially responsible for the damage caused by an accident that was your fault, you should have motorcycle insurance. Motorcycle insurance protects owners from incurring major costs that could be financially devastating.

What is the average motorcycle insurance cost?

According to ValuePengiun, the average cost for motorcycle insurance in the U.S. for 2020 was $702 for a full year of coverage.

Typically, motorcycle insurance is higher for younger less experienced riders and those operating a powerful sports bike. Someone who lives in an area with a large amount of motorcycle theft will most likely pay more.

Each rider has unique circumstances that may influence the cost of motorcycle coverage for them.

The following variables go into determining how much motorcycle insurance will cost, including:

  • Motorcycle type, year, make, model, and engine size
  • Coverage selected
  • Your location
  • Your age
  • Your driving history
